Porsche – Common Issues & Service Needs

Porsche vehicles are high-performance machines, but each model family has known weak points. Servicing them with the correct products and diagnostic tools is essential to prevent expensive failures.

911 (996 / 997 / 991 / 992)
996 & Early 997 (Water-cooled Flat Six)

  • IMS Bearing Failure
Possible engine failure if not upgraded or monitored (mainly 1999–2008 models).

  • Rear Main Seal (RMS) Oil Leaks
    Common on higher-km cars.

  • Coolant Tank Cracks
Due to age and heat cycling.

  • AOS Failure (Air-Oil Separator)
    Causes smoke, rough idle.

997.2 / 991 / 992 (Direct-Injection Engines)

  • High-pressure fuel pump issues
    Shuddering, long cranking.

  • Carbon buildup (DI engines)
Requires walnut blasting around 80–120k km.

  • PDK Transmission Fluid Needs
Hesitation, harsh shifts if not serviced at correct interval.

Porsche Boxster & Cayman (986 / 987 / 981 / 718)

986 / Early 987

  • IMS bearing & RMS leaks (same as early 911s)

  • Convertible roof actuator failures

  • Coolant expansion tank leaks

  • AOS failure

987.2 / 981 / 718

  • Carbon buildup (DI engines)

  • Timing chain tensioner wear

  • PDK servicing required at 60k–80k km

  • Turbo 718 models

    • Wastegate rattle

    • Coil pack failures

Porsche Panamera (970 / 971)

  • ZF 8HP Transmission Service Required
Rough shifting if not serviced around 80–120k km.

  • Coolant lines leaking under intake manifold
    Very common on V6/V8.

  • Air suspension leaks (Turbo / Executive models)

  • Timing cover gasket leaks on early V8s.

  • Starter relay failure (no crank condition).

Porsche Cayenne (955 / 957 / 958 / 9Y0)

1st & 2nd Gen (955/957/958)

  • Cardan shaft (center driveshaft) failure
    Vibration under acceleration.

  • Coolant pipe failures (early V8) – known weak point.

  • Air suspension leaks
    Compressor overworking.

  • Transfer case issues
Jerking or binding at low speed.

  • PCV valve failure
    Rough idle, oil leaks.

Newer Cayenne (9Y0)

  • 48V Mild hybrid electrical issues
    Warning lights, charging issues.

  • Active roll bar actuator wear (PDCC)
    Clunking noises.

Porsche Macan (95B)

  • PDK servicing required
    Harsh downshifts if overdue.

  • Transfer case issues
Jerking during acceleration (very common globally).

  • Coil pack failures

  • Thermostat housing leaks

  • Carbon buildup (DI engines)
    Mild power loss over time.

Porsche Taycan (EV)

  • High-voltage coolant pump issues

  • 12V battery frequent failures
    Causes multiple system errors.

  • Charge port actuator problems

  • Software faults requiring updates

  • Suspension arm bush failures
    Especially on Turbo/Turbo S.
